Five Questions with Apellix

ARM Institute Members vary in their focus areas, sizes, and history, but one common thread unites each organization: a drive to build the future of US manufacturing. Each member organization leverages their strengths and areas of expertise to secure a brighter future for the US workforce, a stronger Organic Industrial Base (OIB), and a more resilient manufacturing economy. We bridge the gaps between industry, academia, and government to solve complex issues inhibiting the ability for the US to be a global leader in manufacturing output. To do this, we convene every stakeholder across manufacturing – from manufacturers themselves, technology providers, and defense suppliers to universities and community colleges, start-ups, and other types of organizations.

This month, our five questions interview features Bob Dahlstrom, CEO of ARM Member Apellix. Apellix is bringing American-made drones to the dull, dirty, and dangerous tasks that our warfighters and human workforce shouldn’t be exposed to. This member collaborator boasts more than 10 years of R&D, multiple U.S. patents, and the distinction of being the first cleaning drone certified as National Defense Authorization Act compliant and flown by the US Army.

1. Can you start by telling us about your background, your role at Apellix and a bit about the company?

I am Bob Dahlstrom, CEO of Apellix. I am passionate about applying software, robotics, and practical innovation to solve difficult real-world problems—especially where technology can make work safer for people. My background is in building and growing technology-driven businesses for demanding industrial and government environments.

At Apellix, we design, manufacture, and deploy aerial robotic systems that perform real work—not simply inspection or photography. Our drones carry and precisely operate tools for industrial coating, power washing, and other maintenance tasks at height. Our mission is to keep people out of hazardous, hard-to-access work areas while improving productivity, consistency, and operational readiness.

Apellix combines autonomous flight, robotics, sensing, software, and purpose-built end-effectors to work around complex infrastructure and the built environment. Our software supports controlled, repeatable workflows through precise positioning, tool operation, mission planning, data capture, and operator oversight.

Safety is central to our work. We reduce worker exposure to heights, hazardous surfaces, and difficult maintenance environments while maintaining human supervision, clear operational controls, and repeatable results.

2. Public and government interest in drone technologies feels like it’s at an all-time high. Can you tell us about industry challenges that Apellix solves? How is Apellix capitalizing on this increased interest in drones?

Interest in drones has accelerated because industries and government organizations increasingly recognize that aerial systems can do much more than collect images or data. The real opportunity is using drones as robotic tools that help solve labor, safety, maintenance, and readiness challenges.

Apellix addresses hazardous and inefficient work that traditionally requires personnel to use scaffolding, lifts, rope access, or other elevated-work methods. Those approaches can be time-consuming, expensive, disruptive to operations, and inherently risky. Our systems are designed to bring the tool to the work surface with controlled positioning and repeatable execution, reducing the need to put people in harm’s way.

We are capitalizing on increased interest in drones by staying focused on mission-specific capability. Rather than treating the aircraft as the product, we treat it as part of a complete robotic work system: the drone, the tool, the control software, the safety processes, and the workflow needed to produce a useful result. That focus is relevant across industrial maintenance, infrastructure, maritime, and defense applications.

3. Let’s talk about your journey into ARM Membership. How did you learn about the ARM Institute and what compelled you to join our consortium?

We learned about the ARM Institute through its leadership in advancing practical robotics for U.S. manufacturing and through the strong network it has built among industry, government, researchers, and workforce-development organizations.

Apellix joined because the ARM Institute’s mission aligns closely with ours: accelerating the adoption of advanced robotics in real operating environments. We see significant potential for aerial robotics to help manufacturers and maintainers improve safety, quality, throughput, and workforce effectiveness—particularly in jobs that are physically demanding, hazardous, or difficult to staff.

We were also compelled by the ARM Institute’s collaborative model. Meaningful progress in robotics requires more than a capable machine; it requires end users, technology providers, integrators, educators, and government stakeholders working together to define requirements, validate solutions, and prepare the workforce to use them. The ARM Institute provides a valuable forum for that work.

4. Apellix is a sponsor of our 10th Annual ARM Member Meeting. Can you tell us why you’re excited about this year’s event?

We are excited to sponsor the 10th Annual ARM Member Meeting because it brings together the people and organizations that are turning advanced robotics into real-world capability. It is an opportunity to exchange ideas with manufacturers, government stakeholders, researchers, and fellow technology companies that share a commitment to strengthening American industrial capacity.

For Apellix, the event is especially valuable because our work sits at the intersection of robotics, worker safety, maintenance, and critical infrastructure. 5. What would you tell ARM Members who are interested in collaborating with Apellix?

We would welcome conversations with ARM members who have challenging work at height, hard-to-reach assets, hazardous maintenance requirements, or a need to improve safety and consistency in physical operations.

The most productive collaborations begin with a clearly defined operational problem. Apellix is interested in working with asset owners, manufacturers, government organizations, research institutions, integrators, and technology partners to identify high-value use cases, test capabilities in realistic environments, and develop deployable solutions at scale.

We are particularly interested in partners who can help advance aerial robotics for industrial maintenance, coatings, cleaning, inspection-to-action workflows, maritime applications, and defense-related maintenance and readiness. If an organization has a difficult job that currently puts people in risky positions or consumes excessive time and infrastructure, we would like to explore whether an aerial robotic approach can make that work safer and more effective.
