ARM Announces Keynote Speakers for Annual National Member Meeting
Meeting to be held on November 5-7, 2018 in Pittsburgh, PA
PITTSBURGH, PA – October 11, 2018 – Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) today announced that Dr. Robert Sadowski, a Senior Scientist for Robotics for the U.S. Army, and Dr. Martial Heber, Director of the Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute, will be the keynote speakers for the organization’s annual member meeting to be held in Pittsburgh, PA on November 5-7, 2018.
Dr. Robert Sadowski serves as the United States Army’s Senior Scientist for Robotics within the Research, Technology and Integration Directorate at the United States Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) in Warren, MI. He is also a member of the Scientific and Professional (ST) cadre of the Senior Executive Service. Dr. Sadowski previously served twenty-nine years of active United States Army duty culminating as the Electrical Engineering Program Director and Academy Professor at the United States Military Academy in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science where he continues serving as adjunct faculty. Dr. Sadowski is a graduate of the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and received his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University as a Fannie and John Hertz Fellow. He also holds a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College.
Dr. Martial Herbert is a Professor of Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University and Director of the Robotics Institute. His research interests include computer vision and robotics, particularly recognition in images and video data, model building and object recognition from 3D data, and perception for mobile robots and for intelligent vehicles. His group has developed approaches for object recognition and scene analysis in images, 3D point clouds, and video sequences. In the area of machine perception for robotics, his group has developed techniques for people detection, tracking, and prediction, and for understanding the environment of ground vehicles from sensor data. A native of Chatou, France, Dr. Herbert earned a doctorate in computer science at the University of Paris before joining the Robotics Institute in 1984, just five years after the Robotics Institute was founded. In 1999, he was named a full professor. Established in 1979, the Robotics Institute was the first robotics department at any U.S. university and is renowned as one of the largest robotics research organizations in the world.
“We are honored to host these distinguished speakers at our second annual member meeting,” stated Byron Clayton, ARM CEO. “Both presenters have invaluable insight on the state of robotics to share with our members, setting the perfect foundation for our event.”
The 2018 National ARM Member Meeting acts as the second since ARM’s inception. Bringing together representatives from 170 member organizations, the event draws hundreds of robotics, manufacturing, and education workforce development experts from across industry, academia, and government into Pittsburgh. This meeting is the cornerstone event for ARM members and provides critical time for project teaming and networking, as well as updates on ARM projects, open project calls, and other member-exclusive activities. Since last year’s meeting in November 2017, ARM has catalyzed 14 additional projects, unveiled a new digital member platform, expanded its staff, launched new branding, and more.
