The Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute (ARM) Board Announces Appointment of Mr. Ira Moskowitz as Incoming CEO
Mr. Moskowitz leads the Manufacturing Innovation Initiative for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
March 11, Pittsburgh, PA – The Board of the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute (ARM) has appointed Mr. Ira Moskowitz, a highly accomplished and experienced manufacturing and technology executive, as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective May 5, 2020. Mr. Moskowitz succeeds Dr. Byron Clayton in the role.
The ARM Institute is the nation’s leading collaborative in robotics and workforce innovation. Structured as a public-private partnership, the organization accelerates transformative robotic technologies and education to increase U.S. global manufacturing competitiveness. Founded in January 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA by Carnegie Mellon University as an independent non-profit funded by the Department of Defense (DoD), ARM is part of the Manufacturing USA® network.
“The ARM Board could not be more pleased to have Ira take on the leadership of this vital institution. Ira’s outstanding record of working with Manufacturing USA® and his demonstrated track record of leading growing and complex operations make him an ideal selection. We look forward to working with Ira as he continues to drive the robotics Institute forward as the nation’s pre-eminent organization focused on the future role of robotics in U.S. manufacturing,” said Brett B. Lambert, Chairman of the ARM Board of Directors.
Prior to his new role, Mr. Moskowitz served as Director of Advanced Manufacturing Programs for the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative. Since 2017, he has led Massachusetts’ efforts for manufacturing innovation, overseeing the Massachusetts Manufacturing Innovation Initiative (M2I2), a $100 million economic development program affiliated with Manufacturing USA®. He serves on the boards of two DoD-led Manufacturing USA® Institutes, AFFOA and AIM Photonics, and has deep experience working directly with state and federal agencies.
Previously, Mr. Moskowitz spent 30 years managing global semiconductor technology development and manufacturing including wafer fabrication, assembly and test operations in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Most recently, he was the Vice President and General Manager of U.S. Operations at Analog Devices, responsible for the company’s domestic manufacturing operations and the technology development that supported it. He also started and managed the manufacturing and process development for a new MEMS venture within Analog Devices which resulted in the commercialization of disruptive airbag control technology. Prior to Analog Devices, Mr. Moskowitz was employed by AT&T Bell Labs where he was named a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, the highest technical designation at Bell Labs.
Mr. Moskowitz holds a Master of Business Administration in Finance and International Business from the Stern School of Business, New York University (NYU), a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester.
“The ARM Institute is well-positioned as the nation’s leading consortium in robotics and workforce innovation and is actively pursuing additional opportunities for greater impact on U.S. manufacturing”, said Dr. Gary Fedder, member of ARM’s Board of Directors and interim CEO. “Ira is an exceptional choice to lead ARM to success in these new opportunities, bringing both the leadership skills and experience in the business of manufacturing to help fulfill the vision of this significant partnership among industry, government and academia.”
Added Dr. Greg Hudas, Department of Defense/Office of the Secretary of Defense (DoD/OSD) Executive Program Manager for ARM, “I look forward to working with Mr. Moskowitz on programs to de-risk and implement new robotic technologies and processes to support the manufacturing of systems for our warfighters, and identify corresponding robotics career paths for our service men and women.”
“I am honored to be joining the tremendous team at ARM and the nation’s foremost collaborative in robotics, automation and workforce education,” said Ira Moskowitz. “The robotics market is set to transform over the next decade with major growth across all sectors. I am excited to contribute to that transformation and the enhancement of our nation’s competitiveness, while simultaneously increasing the skills and value of our manufacturing employees. It has been my privilege to work with so many dedicated and talented colleagues in Massachusetts, and I look forward to contributing to the excellence of U.S. manufacturing.”
Mr. Moskowitz’s appointment comes early in ARM’s fourth year of operations. During this time, the organization has grown its membership to more than 230 companies, funded close to 60 projects in both education/workforce development and technology with applications in both the commercial and military sectors to advance the use of robotics in U.S. manufacturing, launched an online platform to manage projects and share expertise among its membership, hosted a multitude of successful events for both industry and government, and moved into Mill 19 at Hazelwood Green, a rapidly developing location for industrial and technical innovation in Pittsburgh, PA.
